John R. O'Brien received an Honors Degree in Classical Studies, with Distinction, from the University of Michigan in 1976, and received his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Boston College Law School in 1979. Upon his graduation he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Richard P. Conaboy in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.


Admitted to practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the United States District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Attorney O’Brien has appeared in state and federal trial and appellate courts throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has served as counsel to banks, manufacturers and healthcare institutions. He currently concentrates his practice in the field of employment law, banking law, healthcare and business law. For over 30 years, Attorney O'Brien has represented creditors and debtors in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. He is a member of the U.S. Middle District Bankruptcy Bar Association. From 2008 until 2012, Attorney O’Brien served as the Chief Solicitor of Lackawanna County.

Since 1981, Attorney O'Brien has served as a lecturer in business and healthcare law at Marywood University. He is a member of the Lackawanna County and Pennsylvania Bar Associations. He has served two five year terms as a member of the Executive Committee of the Bar and in 2008 he was honored by the Bar with its Distinguished Service Award.

Since 2000, Attorney O'Brien has served as a legal advisor to the Mock Trial team at Scranton Preparatory School. In May of 2010, he was honored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association for helping to lead the team to the Pennsylvania High School Championship and a tenth place finish in the National High School National Championship. The Mock Trial Team won the Pennsylvania High School Championship again in 2012, advancing to the National Championship, where they finished in tenth place in the nation. In addition, Attorney O’Brien currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Pennsylvania Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Attorney O'Brien maintains a hobby of constructing crossword puzzles. His puzzles have been published in the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Attorney O'Brien joined Oliver, Price & Rhodes in 1981 and currently serves as managing partner of the firm.
